Sovereign Hotel

Portland, Oregon

Considered to be Portland’s first skyscraper when constructed in the early 1920’s, the nine-story multifamily housing Sovereign Hotel Building rests on the corner of SW Broadway and Madison Street in downtown Portland. R&H completed a major renovation of the structure including the complete renovation of 45 apartments spanning five floors, restoration of the building mural and new exterior windows. The project also entailed the restoration of historic elements including tile, light fixtures, toilets, tubs and trim, and the replacement of nearly 40 Juliet balconies.

AWARDS

  • Project of the Year, Daily Journal of Commerce
  • DeMuro Award, Restore Oregon

Progress

During the renovation, the project team needed to reproduce a historic corbel in an occupied space without removing them, taking a physical mold of it, or disturbing the tenant. R&H worked with subcontractors to create a 3-D scan that could be used to create a mold for the final product. The collaboration took less than one hour and resulted in thousands of dollars in cost savings.

The finished results are outstanding and the project mission was successfully accomplished with a true team effort.
