Shake Shack
PORTLAND, OREGON
Located across from Powell’s Books on one of downtown’s most popular intersections is Shack Shack’s first Portland location. R&H completed a complex 4,900 s.f. renovation and buildout for the east coast restaurant chain, which included significant structural upgrades to the 1930’s-era building. With a large outdoor patio and ample seating space, this active, urban location is one of Shake Shack’s largest.
The renovation included a full kitchen buildout with top-of-the-line restaurant equipment, a new roof, the replacement of the building storefront, upgraded utilities and a large hardscaped patio with an Ipe wood canopy, slat wall, bicycle parking and flexible outdoor seating.
Progress
Renovating the 1930s-era bow-truss building (formerly a Western Auto Supply, Car Toys and The Vitamin Shoppe) required correcting inconsistent I-beam sizes, clearing out vintage artifacts uncovered during demolition and navigating complex logistics at one of Portland’s busiest intersections. The high-traffic location demanded “just in time” deliveries via SW Oak Street, strict site security, a detailed trade schedule and extensive safety measures for Public sidewalk removal and new street lighting installation.
