Tiller Terrace
PORTLAND, OREGON
Located in SW Portland near Providence Park, R&H recently completed this 214-unit affordable housing development offering studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments. The six-story, mixed-use building also houses retail space, a community room, an outdoor terrace and computer room. The project has been awarded a One Green Globes certification.
The name Tiller Terrace pays tribute to Chinese immigrants, some of Goose Hollow’s earliest residents who built a community and sowed gardens in the former creek bed. The building, designed by SERA Architects, features eight sculpted medallions which depict the phases of one farming cycle: tilling, sowing, watering, growing, harvesting, selling, rest and reset.
Progress
Building a large project directly adjacent to existing occupied structures, in a busy pedestrian and vehicular neighborhood, while managing construction access and logistics and limiting impacts to surrounding community, can represent complex challenges. Effective logistics planning significantly minimized disruptions. Some strategies implemented to address these challenges included: developing a staging and material storage plan, pre-fabricating wood framing components offsite, utilizing just-in-time deliveries during off-peak hours, carefully managing truck routes and practicing proactive communication with neighbors.
